“Elements of News”   

Use these terms as a basis for your analysis of the media we study (for the notes in your media log). Elements of news are what determine a story’s “newsworthiness.”

There are 10 elements of news; however, often a story only needs to have a few of these elements:    
Oddity – (Oddity – Strange/Unusual is news…)

 

Emotion – (Emotion – How do people feel about it?  Strong opinions/controversial topics are news.)

 

Consequence – (Consequence – What is the effect on the audience/reader?)

 

Proximity – (Proximity – Where is the story?)

 

Drama – (Drama – Dramatic Events…)

 

Human Interest – (Human Interest – People doing interesting things…)

 

Prominence – (Prominence – Famous people make news…)

 

Progress – (Progress – Technological advance…)

 

Conflicts – (Conflicts – Man v. man, man v. nature, man v. machine, man v. himself…)

 

Timeliness – (Timeliness – It’s new(s)…)
